Edison “Standard” Phonograph (Combination)

Categories: Gramophone

Thomas Edison produced the first “Standard” phonograph in1898 and was known as the “Square Top” due to the shape of the case which had square corners. Later models had the more familiar curved lid. The model in the picture is the model B from about 1905 with the banner logo on the front of the case and the end gate support to the mandrel. The speed control is to the left of the on/off switch. This model was originally designed to play the two minute cylinders, available at that time, but had been upgraded by the addition of a 2/4 minute gearbox bolted onto the gear-train and a large carrier carrying the “diamond B” reproducer fitted. This was done so that the newer, better, “Blue Amberol” cylinders could be played. Later models of the Standard were capable of playing only 4 minute cylinders.

The addition of the Diamond B reproducer, together with the spectacular “Cygnet Horn”, meant that the phonograph was now very up to date for its time. Early 2 minute wax cylinders were often of poor quality but could still be played on this machine if necessary by engaging the two minute gear-box and fitting a model C reproducer and adapter ring into the carrier. I have checked that this arrangement works well

The above picture shows the large carrier with a model “C” two minute reproducer held in place with an adapter ring.

The original “Cygnet” horn is in good condition and the phonograph is in above average condition and plays very well. The case lid is present, but is not pictured. The phonograph comes with a selection of four four minute cylinders, including one rare ” Indestructible” cylinder and one collectible “Foxtrot” recording.
