Rare “Cliftophone” Portable Gramophone

Categories: Gramophone

Here is a really interesting gramophone developed by William Clifton in about 1928. William Clifton, who had several of his inventions patented, founded the “Cliftophone and Records Limited” in London that year. HIs aim was to revolutionize the reproduction of sound and music. Several models were produced but the company ceased trading in 1929. The overall design of this portable is similar to an HMV101, but the unique feature was the sound-box which had a specially designed diaphragm ( Known as the !Twin Reed” composite diaphragm) and a sound-box that was fitted horizontally. Some early sources stated that Cliftophones were sold exclusively by Chappell Pianos of London, but this example has a “Harrods” sellers plate.

The gramophone is in good condition, has been serviced and plays well. A real collector’s item. It comes with 100 needles and a selection of six 78s if required. Delivery within the UK is about £12.00
