The HMV Model 97C  Portable Gramophone.

In 1931, the HMV and Columbia companies, that has always been keen rivals, were bought together by the EMI organisation. Gramophones continued to be made calling themselves HMV or Columbia but the first  new design of portable that emerged was HMV’s model 97 and  Columbia’s model 204, virtually the same machine and both with Columbia’s No.15A sound-box. In the case of the 97, with a ”Nipper” cover plate. The new gramophones available in 1935 were simplified versions of the HMV 102 and were offered as a cheaper alternative.
This example of the HMV 97C is in a blue case and is in reasonable condition, slightly smaller than  the HMV 102 portables. The Columbia style sound-box produces really good quality reproduction.

The gramophone comes with 100 needles and a selection of six 78s if needed
