Edison “Fireside” Phonograph

Phonographs were the first musical machines that could play recorded words and music, introduced just before 1900 and used wax ( and later celluloid) cylinders for the recordings. The recording was in the form of ridges on the bottom of the cylinder grooves that were decoded by a stylus, usually a sapphire or glass ball. The stylus bounced up and down, hence “Hill-and-Dale”, and the grooves were referred to as “Phono-cut” as compared with later disc recordings that were “Lateral-cut”. Unlike the lateral-cut recordings that used a steel needle, the stylii did not need constant replacing. Initially the cylinders were made from a form of wax and played for about two minutes but later four minute cylinders were available and then the much stronger Blue Amberols that were made from celluloid and performed much better. There were several experimental cylinders around like the Edison-Bell “Indestructible ” two and four minute cylinders.
In order to play all of the different cylinders that turn up, collectors should consider buying a “Combination” phonograph that can play both types of cylinders, two and four minute. Because of the different groove sizes, different stylii are needed. This usually done by using a Model “C” reproducer for two minute and a Model “H” for four minute cylinders. A model “K” reproducer is a rare but valuable addition that has the two stylii that can be changed by rotating. A switch on the phonograph alters the gearing needed to change the speed of travel of the reproducer in the carrier.
