"Hermes" Early Portable Gramophone

hermes

This is a most unusual and rare early portable gramophone.

It was imported, probably from Germany, by wholesalers John G. Murdoch & Co. Ltd. 0f Farringdon Road, London in about 1910 and sold to the trade along with several other gramophones like the "Snip" and the "Pic Nic". This model was entitled the ""Hermes" hornless model". It was advertised as having a combination tone arm, capable of taking both Needle and Sapphire type sound boxes.

The tone arm can be detached and stored , along with the winding handle, in a compartment closed by the right-hand door at the front. The other door reveals the internal metal horn.

The case has a detachable lid cover and is provided with a carry handle on the back. (See inset pictures).
