This is a really nice original horned gramophone from about 1905.
The name "Dulcephone" was used by the firm of Barnett Samuel and Sons of Worship Street London. The firm imported and also manufactured machines from bought-in components. These included "Dulceolas" "Durettas" and eventually "Deccas".
The early Dulcephones were made from components made and licensed by the British Zonophone Company, which was a name used by the Gramophone Company.(Later called HMV). Details of this licensing appears on the "Exhibition" type sound-box. The back-bracket and tone arm is called the "Gibson" design. A feature of Zonophone.
The wooden "Flower horn" is also contemporary, but is a replacement probably made by Craies and Stavridi of Bunhill Road, London
who advertised horns like this as upgrades in "The Sound Wave" magazine as early as December 1908. It is a spectacular
oak horn in excellent condition.
The gramophone has a sideways hinged lid, revealing a double spring motor, and a 10" turntable. The case is oak with corner pillars.
The gramophone plays well and the motor is quiet and effective. This is a very attractive and collectable item.
